Tū Manawa – Active Aotearoa
Sport Gisborne Tairāwhiti is proud to be managing Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa on behalf of Sport NZ in our region.
Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa provides funding for programmes or projects delivering play, active recreation and sport experiences for tamariki and rangatahi. These may be new or already operating.
We know from research that there are some groups who are more at risk of missing out or being less active, including those living with a disability, in higher deprivation communities and girls and young women. Programmes or projects that reach these groups will be prioritised for funding.
Introducing two levels of funding
We’ve shifted the way we manage Sport NZ’s Tū Manawa for our region, to make it more responsive to our community groups.
Now if you have an application amount under $10,000, you can apply any time to our new Fast Fund. Until June 30, 2023 (or if the fund is exhausted), our staff will process Fast Fund applications monthly. This means a shorter processing time and community groups can apply when the timing is right for them.
For applications over $10,000 we’ll have one funding round per year. Applications for the Large Fund will be accepted until Friday, 21 October. These take longer to process — applicants will be notified 6-8 weeks from that date. If this fund is not exhausted, we’ll hold a second Large Fund round in early 2023. Otherwise, the next Large Fund round will happen in October 2023. If you have a project over $10,000, to be delivered anytime during 2023, this October’s application period is when you’ll need to apply.
Both funds still require a consult with one of our staff to make sure your project aligns to the fund, or to help you identify which parts of your project could be funded. Start by contacting Sarah ([email protected]) or the staff member with whom you already have a relationship for a consult.
If you need help completing the application, you can now seek out Kanohi ki te Kanohi / Face to Face application. In this case, we’ll talk with you about your project and help you complete the online application. This is especially useful for anyone who has minimal experience with online forms or applying for funding.
How can I apply?
Before starting your application, please read the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Community Guidelines (English Version, Te Reo Version), Factsheet and the documents under ‘More information’.
To schedule a consult, or if you have any questions, please email us or call (06)8689943.
How much money is in the Tū Manawa Fund?
Sport NZ have committed investment of $284K per year into our region between 2020 – 2024. Based on the application amounts from the past 2 years, we’ve dedicated half of that investment ($142,000) for the Fast Fund. The Fast Fund will run throughout the financial year (until 30 June, 2023) while there is funding to distribute. When the fund is exhausted, we will close the fund until the start of the next financial year (1 July, 2023).
The other half will be distributed in the Large Fund round in October (applications due 21 October, 2022). Any groups who have large project requests (over $10,000 but less than $30,000) should apply in this round for projects delivered any time in 2023. If there is undistributed funding after this round, we will schedule another round in early 2023. If a small amount remains, we’ll move that into the Fast Fund for distribution.
Why did you make these changes?
We think that implementing a fast fund will make the fund more responsive to our community. Groups can act quickly when an idea for a project presents itself. Our Fast Fund will also have faster processing times, which will be better for applicants.
The Large Fund will operate much has it has for the last two years. It will still have the same amount of funding available to support big projects. Deciding on the amounts came from looking at our application amounts and award amounts over the last two years. Roughly half the projects that were applied for were over $10,000. And when we looked at the amounts we awarded, about half of those amounts were over $10,000. We hope that this structure will continue to serve the community, but in an improved way for those wanting small amounts with a shorter turnaround time.
We’re treating these changes as a trial. We’ll keep an eye on how this is playing out for our community and make any changes necessary.
