Swim the Distance is an indoor swimming challenge that encourages participants to swim 45.5km over a 2 month period (the distance from Gisborne to Mahia).
The challenge runs every year, from 1 August – 30 September, and encourages the community to swim the distance between Midway Beach and Mahia (45.5km).
Swim the Distance is a partnership event run by Sport Gisborne Tairāwhiti and the Gisborne Olympic Pools. Proceeds from the event go to a local charity.
To register, grab a registration form from our office or the Olympic Pools, or download an entry form from below and drop it off at the Olympic Pools.
Alert Level Two Update:
Recreation Swim the Distance challenge will recommence from Thursday 9 September.
Due to the disruption of COVID-19 and Alert Level changes, we will extend the challenge period to finish on Wednesday 20 October.
To ensure we can deliver the event safely under Government and Ministry guidelines, there are requirements we must follow.
📞The Olympic Pools can only have a maximum of 50 people indoors, so you must book before heading to the pool. Pool Reception ph. 06 8676 220. No booking, no swimming
🏊♀️You will have access to your lane for 1 hour per swim. We need to ensure that everybody has access so you cannot book for consecutive hours
😷You must wear a mask at all times when NOT in the water
📱You must sign-in with QR code or manual
↔️You must maintain 2m social distancing in and out of the water
🤐Please no congregating with friends pool side or while taking a rest during your swim
👕The changing rooms will be open. One shower will be available per male/female, and toilets are available on request. It is preferred you arrive already in your swimwear and leave straight after your swim, but we appreciate that this is not realistic for all participants
🖐Contactless entry – this means you will need your swipe card. Any shop purchases will also be contactless
🥰Have fun, enjoy, keep smiling and send us your photos of milestones
